How to Spot a Counterfeit Canadian Bill

moneyinfo

Kelowna RCMP are warning the public about an uptick in counterfeit $20, $50, and $100 polymer bills.

To check if a Canadian polymer note is fake, look for raised ink on the portrait and shoulders, confirm the metallic multi-coloured holographic portrait in the clear window matches the main portrait, and make sure the small numbers in the window match the bill’s value.

Key security features to check:

  • Feel the texture: Genuine polymer notes are smooth and made from one solid piece of plastic. You should feel raised ink on the portrait, large numbers, and the words “Bank of Canada.”
  • Inspect the large window: The holographic portrait and building should shift colours when tilted. The tiny numbers inside the window must match the denomination.
  • Check the maple leaf border: The small maple leaves around the clear window should be sharp and defined. Some will change colour when moved.
  • Look for hidden numbers: Hold the note up to a bright light, even your phone’s flashlight. In the small frosted maple leaf window, the denomination will appear in a starburst pattern.
  • Check the serial numbers: The serial number should look embedded in the bill, not printed on top. If several suspicious bills share the same serial number, that is a major red flag.

What to do if you suspect a fake:

  • Politely refuse the bill and ask for another one.
  • Contact local police.
  • Do not put yourself at risk.

For full official guidelines, visit the Bank of Canada website.

🌦 Early Spring 2026 Outlook

Early spring in Kelowna looks like it will ease in slowly. Expect a sluggish, volatile start through March and April. Cooler days. Frequent swings. And yes, likely more umbrellas than patio weather.

While some long-range forecasts suggest a 70% chance of above-normal temperatures for the Okanagan from February to April, shorter-term outlooks point to an unsettled pattern with steady precipitation.

Seasonal Outlook Summary

  • Temperature: Expect changeable conditions with a colder-than-normal trend through March and April. Consistent warmth may not settle in until May.
  • Precipitation: Above-normal moisture is likely. That means rainy stretches and even the chance of late-season snow flurries in March or early April.
  • The “Sharp Turn”: Experts suggest the season could flip fast. After a cool start, we may see a sudden shift to hot, dry weather by late May or June.

In short, spring may wobble before it walks. But if history holds, summer could arrive all at once.

🏘️ Real Estate

houses

As Kelowna moves into March 2026, the real estate market is characterized by a "slow and steady" awakening from winter. While overall activity is lower than last year, stabilized interest rates have begun to pull cautious buyers back into the market. The current environment is largely balanced, with the sales-to-new-listings ratio hovering between 40–45%, meaning neither sellers nor buyers hold extreme leverage.

  • Detached Single-Family Homes: This segment remains the most resilient, with the typical home price holding firm above the $1 million mark. While sales volume saw a 17% decrease compared to last January, inventory also dipped by 11%, keeping supply tight and supporting steady pricing. Sellers of well-prepared homes are still seeing solid interest, but they must be realistic, as buyers are now more deliberate and sensitive to accurate pricing than in previous years.
  • Townhomes: The townhouse market is currently the most active sector relative to others, with sales sitting only 5% below last year's levels. Inventory in this category has decreased by 7%, and the average sale price is approximately $730,581, which is about 4% lower than last January. This segment offers a middle ground for buyers who are "hopping off the fence" as they seek more space than a condo but find detached homes out of reach.
  • Condos: Buyers currently have the most leverage in the condo market, where available listings have grown by 9% while sales decreased by 12%. This increased inventory has led to longer marketing windows, providing buyers with more choice and room for negotiation. Sellers in this category face the most competition due to a influx of new rental-only housing options and cooled investor demand, making strategic presentation and competitive pricing essential to attract a sale.

In January 2026, we were sitting at 11.3 months of inventory, up from 9.8 months in January 2025. This keeps us in a buyer’s market for now, offering more options for buyers as we continue into the new year!
